چکیده

Since neoplasia has been induced in tissue culture by means of a chemical carcinogen (5), the question arises whether similar neoplastic transformation of cells in vitro can be brought about by other types of carcinogens, such as viruses. This question was answered by successfully growing epidermis of the domestic rabbit in tissue culture and then inoculating it with the Shope papilloma virus. The experiments to be reported show that under these conditions, neoplastic transformation of epithelial cells occurs in vitro.

Infectiousness of the virus in Shope papillomas induced or grown in the variant rabbit strain and in a resistant species.

In the great majority of cases, the pathogenicity of the Shope papilloma virus is lost after transfer from cottontail to domestic rabbits. There is adequate evidence that the virus is present in the papillomas arising in domestic rabbits, for such animals develop neutralizing and complementfixing antibodies. :Further, the intraperitoneal inoculation of extracts of noninfectious papillomas resul...

Cellular Retinole Acid-binding Protein in Virus-induced Shope Papillomas of Rabbit Skin1

Cellular retinole acid-binding protein (cRABP) was detected in the cytosol of virus-induced papilloma (Shope) of rabbit skin. The Shope papilloma cRABP showed the same ligand specific ity and sedimentation value (2S) as was found in other animal species. The level of cRABP in the papillomatous tissue was significantly higher than that in the normal rabbit skin and increased in accordance with t...

The induction of the Rous sarcoma in heterologous transplants of virus-infected adult chicken tissue.

The capacity of the Rous chicken tumor to survive heterologous transplantation has been demonstrated in both early and late stages of development.'"' Such investigations were concerned with the transformed cell while the question at issue in the present study involves the cell during the process of transformation. It has been observed that adult rabbit skin infected either in vivo or in vitro w...

The induction of the Shope papilloma in transplants of embryonic rabbit skin.

One of the problems incident to the successful transplantation of embryonic tissue concerns the status of the transplant in relation to the constitu tion of the host. Variations in susceptibility to in fectious agents offer a convenient measure of con stitutional difference and have been employed for this purpose in the study of homologous trans plants in immunologically altered hosts as well a...
